  3.     Every manager should reflect on the points made in your special
  4. report about the missing gung-ho spirit among American workers and
  5. the ebbing loyalty to the corporation (BUSINESS, Sept. 11). Shrewd
  6. bosses realize that employees who perceive that their security and
  7. participation are aligned with the company's productivity and
  8. profitability will take risks on the firm's behalf. While temporary
  9. staffing has an important place, the concept that a manager can
  10. "rent" a professional work force that is able to expand and
  11. contract on demand does not recognize the time required to
  12. cultivate an atmosphere of mutual support.

  17.     Don't assume that the "turmoil"  being experienced by the
  18. current work force is a negative thing. Maybe companies are finally
  19. waking up to the needs of being competitive in the world
  20. marketplace. If, to cure U.S. employees of complacency and make
  21. American business viable again, a small amount of temporary
  22. turbulence must be endured, so be it.

  28.     Your article reads like a chapter out of my past, but it fails
  29. to mention the effect of career transition on family. At an outing
  30. with my daughter's kindergarten class, a boy asked me, "Mr.
  31. Hemingway, have you got a job yet? Sometimes Erin is very sad
  32. because you don't have one."
